Here’s a fairly quick and simple design that fills a niche in the phone charging market. I was unable to find a phone mount that uses the latest charging technology, holds the phone in place with magnets, and mounts to a vent. So, I built my own.
Here’s the starting device: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01H76NIAS/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Unscrew the front, and the ceramic charging plate is exposed. Lightly exposing it to a heat gun allows the plate to come free. Its just glued in there with a lightweight epoxy. Caution has to be exercised in extraction, as the ceramic is prone to breaking. The circuitry is glued in underneath, and can be removed in the same manner.
A frame of maple, glued together.
Then 4 13mm neodynium disc magnets were added. They line up with ferromagentic adhesive backed plates which attach to the phone case.
Added some walnut veneer, and attached a vent mount plate from an alternative phone mount.
Final thoughts: While it ended up a little chunky in appearance. It is very functional. The phone is held in place very well. It will charge the phone even during highly battery intensive tasks are performed, such as google maps running navigation. I’m very happy with it.
